Beyond the Lights
A Message from the Playwright:
I originally wrote Beyond the Lights as a screenplay based on a personal experience. The inspiration for my play comes from some of my favorite romantic comedy films of the past: It Happened One Night, Roman Holiday, Almost Famous, and Shakespeare in Love. Also, I am very attracted to characters with strong, clashing personalities, so I try to incorporate these traits into my own characters. Putting the characters in unfamiliar and uncomfortable situations creates unexpected results both for myself, when writing the play, and the audience during the journey of the characters of Emma and Ryan. Throughout the play, there are details and explanations I purposely leave out. By doing so, I leave it up to the audience to use their own imagination to come up with their own meanings and interpretations of the story.
Overall, this play speaks to all people to remember who you are, and who your real friends are. Sometimes you lose your way, but there are people there to guide you back. I hope you enjoy this play as much as I enjoyed writing it!
